A Chair for Grandma… and a Table and Bed too

Growing older is something none of us can avoid and sooner, or later, mobility issues impact our lives. But a rising number of seniors are choosing to “age in place” and modify their homes to fit their needs rather than moving into a new space. Small tweaks like adding stair ramps and changing your furniture make it possible to enjoy your home well into your golden years.

“Senior furniture is important to aging in place at home, if you want to be successful and be there for a long time,” said Adam Dunn, the Chief Operating Officer of Senior Home Furnishings.

Senior Home Furnishings, a new furniture company in Pasadena, is making it easier to tailor your home to your needs. It’s one of the first E-Commerce stores to offer senior living furniture made with specific dimensions including narrower armrests, firmer cushions, and high-wear-stain resistant fabrics.

Dunn explains that furniture can make a big difference in a senior’s life. He adds that current on-the-market furniture tends to have deeper cushions and softer armrests which can make it harder to comfortably get on and off of without assistance.

“No joke, seniors will get stuck. They have to have somebody to come and lift them out,” he said.

This seemingly comic scenario can become a more serious one when seniors live at home or alone and may have trouble reaching a phone to call for assistance. In addition to getting stuck, falls are some of the most pressing problems seniors face, according to the National Council on Aging.

Senior Home Furnishings tackles this problem by designing furniture specifically for seniors. For example, their couches are between 19 and 21 inches tall with shallower seats and firmer cushions. Small details like attached cushions prevent people from slipping and make it easier to reach for armrests.

“Our armrests are generally much more narrow and [seniors] with limited grip have the ability grab on as they pull themselves up,” said Dunn.

The line of furniture includes everything from couches and chairs to dining room sets. Senior Home Furnishing’s products are used in residential homes as well as in assisted living communities and hospitals. They also use antimicrobial, easy to clean fabric in all of their products to make clean-up and care easier.

“We are all aging, and we all will soon have mobility issues,” said Dunn.
