Get a Head Start on Your Holiday Hosting Plans

Thursday, August 13, 2015

Whether or not you want to admit it the end of summer vacation is just around the corner. Once school starts it seems as though Halloween, Thanksgiving and the rest of the holidays are just around the corner, promising lots of family get together’s and over-night visitors.

That means, right now is the perfect time to make sure everything is running smoothly in your home while you still have the spare time.
It can never hurt to make sure your home is in tip-top shape before the start of the visiting season. From paint touch ups to floor repairs you can make sure that all the little things are checked off on your to do list.

An important aspect of your home not to forget? Your plumbing.

If you are planning on upgrading any of your fixtures, i.e. new faucets or toilets, ordering certain items can take up to 5 weeks or so. Don’t forget everyone wants to fix things up and plumbers in general are swamped during the holidays for repairs and new installations. Don’t put yourself in that position and have the added stress.

Of course you want to get any major repairs out of the way, but something easy as getting a new line to the ice maker on your fridge can make your holiday season run so much more smoothly. If your freezer is stuffed with a twenty-pound turkey you definitely can’t fit several bags of ice for those cocktails.

Phyllis Keithley of Keithley Plumbing strongly suggests taking a look at your plumbing needs now before your home faces the stresses of holiday entertaining.

“Residents should definitely get their drains cleaned, especially their main line. They should do it ahead of time so that they don’t have any backups from flooding when their guests are there.” Remember you don’t want to pay a higher cost for an emergency visit as well.
Grandma wouldn’t appreciate the shower backing up when she is washing her hair.

Another consideration is the condition of your garbage disposal. Can you imagine if the disposal threw up last night’s dinner on Great Aunt Edith? “And maybe (the) garbage disposal needs to be upgraded and handle all that extra food they’re going to be stuffing down on it,” says Phyllis.

So while you’re making your back-to-school checklists, don’t forget to sneak in one extra-early holiday to-do. You’ll thank yourself later.
