It’s summertime and the height of DIY season. Has your man always hinted about the idea of his own man cave? You know, a place where he can chill out, listen to his own music, play his favorite computer game without the kids, or read his favorite car magazine in his own quiet, private space. According to psychologists, giving the man of the house his own private space can serve a basic psychological function that will positively affect his emotional well-being.

Here is a step-by-step guide to help you get started on that ultimate cave for the man of the house.

1. Determining the space.

First and foremost, know your man and what he likes doing in his spare time, then create the space accordingly. Do you see him to be tinkering a lot with his car? Then you can create his cave in or near the garage.

Does he like loud music or play a lot of video games? Then it would be a great idea to create his cave in the den or the basement fitted with soundproofing.

According to La Cañada-based interior designer Scott Montgomery of Scott Montgomery Design Incorporated, who has worked on everything from small residences to large offices to an 84-foot yacht — creating a space is based on the interpretation of what the client wants, in this case, what you think Dad would want.

2. Designing the interiors.

Once you have determined the space, you can begin planning how the room will be laid out. First, decide on the focal point. This should be based on what your man is passionate about and will be your guide in determining the theme of the space. If he’s into movies, then the television and some nicely framed posters of his favorite movies are good choices. Is he the physical type? Then it would be the workbench amidst an industrial-type of decor.

Once you have your focal point, you may begin to list down the objects and accessories including the design elements that will go with your theme.

3. Decorating the cave.

If your man is the intellectual type who is into reading, researching, working on the computer all the time, using warm, neutral and earthy colors can create the tone for a masculine, old-world chic theme.

Does your man have a favorite sports team? Get creative with their colors when decorating your man’s cave. You don’t have to color the whole room in just cardinal red and gold; why not try an accent wall in one of the team’s main colors and selecting complimentary accent colors instead?

4. Furnishing the cave.

Comfort is your primary goal. Choose the most relaxing seats you can find –couches, recliners, armchairs, or beanbags and put in the best tables that will complement your chairs. Just be sure to keep your theme in mind — sporty, book-types, artistic or musical.

It would also be ideal to put in shelves to hold books, trophies, memorabilia and collectibles that your man is particularly proud of.

If your man is into entertainment, a TV with added speakers would be nice or set up a home theater equipped with a projector and canvas screen.

His favorite electronics are going to up some major bandwidth, so make sure to install a WiFi range extender for better signal.

Another luxurious idea for dad is to put in a fridge for his cold beer and snacks. If he likes mixing drinks, then you can set up a mini-bar using a counter top, some shelves and a bar stool or two.

There are numerous design options to choose from. However, if you’re struggling with ideas, don’t hesitate to consult an expert like Scott Montgomery, a designer known for his sophisticated and sleek interior and exterior designs.
