Get Crafting in the New Year

Monday, December 26, 2016

DIY is an emerging trend that gives the freedom to create a one-of-a-kind piece – sometimes for a fraction of the cost. Instead of spending your money at a big box craft or hardware store, pick up some unique supplies and chat with local artisans at the Pasadena Bead and Design Show.

“We’re really seeing a resurgence in the handmade and the American made craft,” said Casey Johnson of Garan-Beadagio, LLC and Pasadena show manager.

This January semi-annual show is the largest of the year and includes over 300 exhibitors from across the United States. The juried show is a mix of wholesale retailers with hard-to-find items like Bali and Thai silver beads, semi-precious stones and colorful glass beads plus artisans selling their handmade jewelry and clothing. Here you’ll find expert artisans, many of whom are willing to share their expertise and experience.

“We saw a lot of people coming out, wondering how to make jewelry,” said Johnson. “It’s really something anyone can learn to do.”

Don’t miss out on the workshop classes held every day. These artisan-led workshops give participants a taste of jewelry design, polymer clay, wirework, crystal setting, electroplating, bead making, art clay silver, hand knotting, mixed media, chainmaille, and enameling. Most classes include materials for an extra fee. There will also be drop in make-and-take classes throughout the show.

“You can take [a class] and make a jewelry piece that is very professional looking,” said Johnson.

Come explore new arts and special supplies to make your own crafts.

The Pasadena Bead and Design Show will take place on January 12-15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., It is open to the public, admission is $10 at the door and good for all four days at the Hilton Pasadena on 168 South Los Robles Avenue. Visit www.pasadenabeadanddesignshow.com for more details.
