6 Ways to Give Your Bedroom a Makeover

Friday, September 12, 2014

The word ‘makeover’ sounds scary to many homeowners, but it shouldn’t. Makeovers don’t have to be expensive or take up a lot of time. With a little guidance, makeovers can be very easy, cheap and non-stressful. Here are some tips to helping you makeover your bedroom.

1. Clear the Clutter

What many homeowners don’t realize when making over their rooms is what looks good subconsciously. For instance, our minds find sleek, minimal surfaces much more attractive that cluttered, complex ones. It’s always a good idea, then, to try to clear the clutter. To start, rid the room of everything that isn’t necessary or conducive to relaxation. At the very least, hide any stress-inducing clutter in a stylish simple container.

2. Focus on the Bed

Beds are one of the most essential aspects of bedroom-obviously. So if you haven’t already, consider a duvet or comforter to buck up the bedding. A new duvet and matching shams can create a whole new feel. You might also consider a headboard that makes the room look more polished and intentional.

3. Rearrange the Furniture

Sometimes, just a simple rearranging of furniture can open up space physically and mentally, opening up new creative ideas that can help you make your room the best it can be. So don’t be afraid to shake things up. While you’re at it, rotate and flip your mattress around to prevent uneven wear and tear.

4. Cut a Rug

Adding a properly sized rug can make the room look more pulled together and united. Make sure to get one that fits the dimensions of your room technically, but also aesthetically. Often people buy rugs that they know will fit, but they end up looking bad.

5. Windows

Make your windows pop with some curtains or patterns. You might also consider window stoppers, which can not only be used functionally to keep windows from opening or closing when unwanted, but they can spruce up the windows’ feel. Some window stoppers are only functional, so make sure to look for window stoppers that make your windows look good and that fit with the rest of the room. You can pick up window stoppers at any home improvement retailer.

6. Lighting

Lighting is an aspect of design many homeowners forget about. Keep your bedroom lighting subdued. Make sure to use three-way bulbs so you can adjust the wattage to your needs.

Your bedroom is a great starting point for a larger home renovation project. Good luck!
