People who know what they want to be in life and follow it with fervor are few and far between. One of them is Jeanette Chasworth, a successful interior designer with the natural flair for combining beauty and color with functionality.

“I was actually inadvertently raised to be an interior designer by my parents,” revealed Chasworth, known as the Color Whisperer. Chasworth and her sister were raised by their mother who was afflicted with polio during her childhood.

“I painted. I put up wallpaper and we moved furniture,” recalls Chasworth.  “Her feeling was that most people move every seven years and she wasn’t ever intending on moving out of that house.”  Instead, monthly home remodels were “perfectly normal.”

Her father’s penchant for history, on the other hand, directly influenced Chasworth’s appreciation for historical structures and their interiors.  “My dad loves history. He always loved taking us in historic houses, visited historic places.”  In Pasadena, many homeowners can respect Chasworth’s appreciation and respect for history considering our rich collection of historic architecture.

Chasworth earned a degree in literature and was in the publishing industry for three years. “My first love was literature and I love it because it’s psychology, sociology and history all wrapped up in one.”

However, she gave up this career and pursued a course in interior design at the Los Angeles’ Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising which further fueled her passion. “It [had] everything I loved about literature and it included my other big love, furniture.”

Dubbed “The Color Whisperer” by her clients, Chasworth realizes there are many different aspects that go into designing the right space for the right person, but emphasizes, “the unsung hero is color.”

“The right colors can make a room come to life, and the wrong ones can suck the life out of a room,” warns Chasworth.  “Color affects us deeply on a psychological and physical level and it’s a tool most people don’t know how to use.”

A member of the American Society of Interior Designers, Chasworth also specializes in design that focuses on the concept of “aging-in-place.” Her first hand experience with her mother makes Chasworth a more conscientious and effective designer.

“Aging-in-Place is the design that allows you to be more flexible in your home. It allows you to stay in your home longer,” Chasworth explains.

“One thing that I do… I don’t care how old my [client] is, I ask them certain questions. “Is this the house you plan on living in for a long time?”  If they say yes, then I bring these things up.”

Throughout her design career, Chasworth strives to create an environment that truly reflects her client’s personality. Her creative intuition brings to life her client’s ideas through the visual play of color and design.
