The Hunt for the Perfect Mattress

Monday, October 27, 2014

Sleep-deprived? Congratulations! You’re one of the millions of Americans who can’t seem to get a good night’s rest. We can point to a lot of reasons why this happens. Stress and your diet, for instance, can affect your sleeping pattern. But studies reveal that your mattress is just as guilty.

Comfort is a crucial factor to a restful sleep and your mattress plays a big part in making sure you get that. If your body is cushioned well during the night, you find yourself revved up in the morning and ready to take on the world!

An obstacle to getting that elusive perfect mattress, however, is choosing the right one. The types, sizes, brands, and your budget can overwhelm you. The frustration over the choices could lead you to buy a mattress just because it only took 5 minutes of your time.

Mattress expert Stephanie Saunders of Wallbeds’n’More says “I tell people that mattress are totally subjective to what you like.” Wallbeds’n’More specializes in Murphy wallbeds and also offers a full range of high-quality mattresses for all sleeping preferences – firm, soft or foam.

Mattress types depend on the materials used to fabricate it. Wallbeds’n’More carries six different mattress types, one of which is the fabric wrapped coil spring mattress. This type consists of 500 to 700 individual coils each individually wrapped in a muslin type fabric to keep them separate and from rubbing on each other. The muslin fabric connected at the bottom of each spring is what keeps the springs together as they are not connected by wire from one spring to the next.

A VertiCoil spring unit is another type in which the individual helical coil is tied by wire in one place to the next adjacent spring but not fabric wrapped.

A Bonell, on the other hand, is a helical coil spring that is tied to each adjacent spring with more than one wire and it is a firmer spring system in general and it is not fabric wrapped.

There are also many types of foam mattress that have seen improvements over the years to help keep you cool while you sleep, as older models tended to make people uncomfortably warm.

Whatever type you choose, it all comes down to your personal preference. Some people like hard mattresses while others go for soft ones that swallow them when laid upon.

Stephanie reminds us, “the other thing I tell people is in California mattresses are not returnable….once that mattress crosses the line, you own it!”

So, choose your mattress wisely!
